Christ Has Set Us Free

Christ Has Set Us Free

"For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1

What is freedom? I think we can all imagine what freedom means to us in our own lives. For me, I can't help but think about the tragic slave trade operation in the United States. By God's grace on January 1st, 1863 President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which announced that all slaves were free in America. Unfortunately, this incredible news of freedom did not reach the state of Texas until two and a half years later. Could you imagine being a slave in Texas knowing freedom was available to you and all that needed to happen was someone to tell you? Again, by God's grace, a man named Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Texas on June 19th, 1865 to proclaim all slaves were free! It was documented that before Granger even finished his speech, slaves dropped their tools and left town to begin their new life of freedom.⠀

I think of Jesus when I read about that story. I think about how he conquered sin and death for all people and came to set a heart of selfless love into us by his Spirit. He came to set us free and that freedom is available to anyone who would receive such a gift through faith in him. Most of us just need a man like Gordon Granger to come and proclaim that freedom into our lives.
