"They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved." 2 Peter 2:19
Man, you read a verse like that and for me I think about all the voices in our world today. I think about advertisements, politically charged conversations, religion, even pharmaceutical companies with the new cure for all our problems, and so on. The hook I hear often is personal happiness, prosperity and freedom. For me, I’ve checked out their offer and I’ve only left empty and lied to. I’ve found that all along I’ve just needed someone to fight for me.⠀
The American Civil War in the United States began in 1861. This battle was fought solely over the abolishment of humans owning other humans for forced labor, also known as slavery. The men and women who were enslaved in the South were controlled by their owners, and unless someone would come and fight for their cause, their chains would remain. Thankfully, we know the end of this story. The Union Army, under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, won the war on April 9, 1865.⠀
This time in history has endless symbolism for what our God in Christ Jesus did for all of mankind. Because of God’s love for us, God willingly left the perfection of Heaven to fight for the enslaved. Scripture says that the true war is for our souls and that our battle “is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.” Guys, this battle is bigger than us and no good work of ours can save us. Our victory is going to be only the work of God himself. Over 2000 years ago Jesus took on all of our sorrow, suffering and sin and allowed his own creation to drive nails through his hands and feet to hang in humiliation on a Roman cross. Our victory and freedom came 3 days later when Jesus’ body began to breathe again. That day God declared all those who call upon his name will receive a brand new start. In Jesus we can hit the restart button and receive a completely new life. We only need to humble ourselves and call upon His name in faith. ⠀
Are you willing?
