The Helper Will Come

The Helper Will Come

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you." John 16:7

David Wilkerson, a Pastor and the Founder of Teen Challenge, spent most of his life sacrificially serving the New York City teenage gang scene back in the 1950s and 60s. He housed these young gang members in a small place on Clinton Ave in Brooklyn. Wilkerson would share the love of Christ with them as they were recovering from drug addictions. Most of them were severely enslaved with heroin addictions. One day he asked these recovered addicts how they were successful at overcoming their heroine addictions and they all responded with the same thing, “when I was baptized in the Holy Spirit.” David Wilkerson noted in his book The Cross and the Switchblade, “Again and again I got the same report. I cannot describe how excited I was. A pattern seemed to be emerging. I felt that I was on the verge of something tremendous.”⠀

The Holy Spirit changes people. When anyone receives the gospel in faith, The Holy Spirit powerfully works to give us eyes to see and ears to hear. Jesus said that when he ascended to heaven he would not leave us on our own to fight. He said he would give us the Helper. A life of faith in following Jesus is IMPOSSIBLE without the Holy Spirit. We add nothing to God's kingdom here on earth without him. The Holy Spirit is the strength, power, and new life of those who place their trust in Jesus. He is our breakthrough.⠀
