“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17
What’s a good gift you have received? For me, one of the best gifts I’ve ever received was when my In-laws gave me their daughter’s hand in marriage. For some of us a good gift is eating a fish taco on the beach, others it’s making rent each month, and for some, it’s living to see another day. Whatever your gift might be, the bible teaches us that anything labeled as “good” is given to us by our heavenly Father. Like the rays are to the Sun, all this good points back to him, the true and never changing good.⠀
God showed his creation perfect goodness by coming down from heaven to give the world an earthshaking gift. That gift was himself, taking on the likeness of man. He lived a life full of joy in the Father but was also met with pain and suffering. Jesus was in paradise, but chose to become a servant of man and willingly lay his life down as a sacrifice. Why would he do that? The Bible says the answer to that question is love. He knew, because of our sin, we could never save ourselves. His love for us was on full display as his lifeless body hung on a Roman cross as a payment for the sins of all who would receive him.⠀
Jesus is the greatest gift heaven could ever give. He is our ultimate good. He is better than any paycheck, vacation, laughter, health, or life itself. For those who have faith in Jesus and what He accomplished on our behalf on the cross, we can claim his resurrection from the dead as our own. Nothing is better than his love..
